Watermelon Sorbet

It is 101 degrees outside today, and I am doing everything possible to keep cool. We are making ice cream often, and turning the oven on as little as possible.  To help cool us down, we purchased the Cuisinart ice cream maker from Williams-Sonoma, and I have been experimenting with it since. Yesterday, I found a recipe for watermelon sorbet and decided to give it a try. I am not a huge fan of watermelon, but I loved this! If you don't like watermelon this recipe just might change your mind. You can make it with rum or ginger ale depending on whether or not you want a kid friendly version. I made the first batch with ginger ale.  This was just what we needed to end a warm summer evening. You can even make this sorbet without an ice cream maker.

Watermelon Sorbet
recipe adapted from Giada De Laurentis

3 1/2 cups fresh 1 inch pieces of watermelon, seeded and chilled
3/4 cup ginger ale, chilled
6 oz pineapple juice, chilled
1/2 cup cherry grenadine
1/3 cup fresh lime juice, about 3 large limes

Put the watermelon into a blender and blend until smooth. Add the ginger ale, pineapple juice, cherry grenadine, and lime juice until smooth. Pour into ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions for about 40 minutes. Remove and serve immediately or freeze in an airtight container.
